Chapter 5: Cold Caller

Tegoshi Yuya worked for a karaoke bar. His job was to phone people up during working hours and inform them of different promotions and offers to boost the number of visitors that went there. Tegoshi would say that he was very good at what he did. He would sometimes have the honour of singing down the phone to some people. Well, two people really.

“Hi, my name is Tegoshi Yuya and I’m calling on behalf of Sing-Song Karaoke Bar to inform you of some of the special offers that we have.”

“It’s really nice of you to call, Tegoshi-san.”

That was weird, Tegoshi thought. Usually he’d just get people hang up on him or give generic replies but that one sounded like part of an actual conversation.

“Yes, well… Just doing my job.”

“I see. Can I ask you a question?”

“Do you actually sing at this karaoke place where you work?”

A pause. To be honest, Tegoshi hadn’t. It wasn’t like he didn’t want to, it’s just between work and studying, he just never had the time.

“Well, I haven’t recently.”

“Is it fun?” The receiver asked.

“Of course,” Like Tegoshi was going to say ‘no’.

“Sing me a song then.”

“Eh?” Tegoshi flustered a bit, this was a bit embarrassing not to mention unexpected. “What song?”

“Any song is fine.”

“Alright, um… Twinkle, twinkle little star-”

“OK, maybe not ‘any song’,” there was a pause. “Do you know Daite Senorita? Sing that.”

So Tegoshi sang, wary that his colleagues were now giving him looks from over their desks as he did so and he breathed a sigh of relief when he got to the end.

“So, what did you think?”

“It was good. Why don’t you try out for some talent agency instead of working at that karaoke place?”

Tegoshi made a sound that gave the impression he that he agreed just before he was hung up on. He sat and blinked for a while before checking his list of telephone numbers and looked for the name of the person he had just been speaking to.

Yamapi was on a break from his intensive fifteen hour dance training when it was announced that someone new had been admitted into the agency and that he had to stick by him and show him the ropes.

“So you’re Tegoshi Yuya?”

“Yeah,” the young boy smiled.

“What did you do before coming here?”

“I worked at a karaoke bar. I was a cold caller.”

“Really? What made you change professions?”

“One day someone asked me to sing down the phone to them and they said I was good and that I should get signed up.”

“I think I remember getting a singing call from a karaoke place,” Yamapi pursed his lips together in thought.

“That was probably me,” Tegoshi blushed and bit his lip a bit in nervousness.

“Next time when you call me sing OK? It’s good practice and well… You do sound good.”

It was then that Tegoshi knew he made the right decision and mentally thanked that voice on the phone: Kato-san.
